A lathe is used for machining round or cylindrical workpieces. The workpiece is clamped in a clamping tool. This prevents the workpiece from sliding during the process. The workpiece is rotated around its axis with a constant movement. The cutting tool (the chisel) is attached to a support in a chisel holder. The support then slides over the bed in the longitudinal direction of the workpiece. The support can also move transversely to the workpiece. The chisel touches the rotating workpiece and cuts it into the correct shape. With CNC lathes, the program can be pre-programmed so that a whole series can be produced in succession.
